Fitness for Duty Evaluations

Extensive evaluations

At Mansfield Counseling, we provide comprehensive Fitness for Duty evaluations for organizations, supervisors, and individuals in safety-sensitive or high-responsibility roles. Our goal: to assess psychological and behavioral readiness, identify any barriers, and offer clear, actionable recommendations.

Our Approach

  1. Intake/Referral – We begin with a conversational interview with the individual (and sometimes the referring supervisor or HR partner) to clarify the referral question: “Is the employee currently fit to perform the essential duties of their position?”

  2. Testing & Evaluation – We employ validated psychological instruments, structured interviews, collateral information (supervisor/HR input, prior records if applicable), and behavioral observations as appropriate.

  3. Analysis & Interpretation – Our clinicians integrate test findings with clinical history, job demands, and risk factors to form a clear assessment of readiness and capacity.

  4. Feedback & Report – We provide a detailed written report that includes results, diagnostic impressions (if applicable), strengths and concerns, and tailored recommendations (clearance to duty, conditional clearance, restrictions, or follow-up referral). We also conduct a feedback session with the individual (and employer/HR, if appropriate) to review findings and next steps.

  5. Follow-Up & Support – We offer support, recommendation monitoring, referral for treatment or coaching if needed, and assistance with implementing the plan.

Why it matters?

In roles where safety, trust and performance are critical—such as law enforcement, fire & EMS, public transit, manufacturing, or supervisory leadership—ensuring that an employee is psychologically fit for duty is vital. A Fitness for Duty evaluation can help you:

  • Protect your workforce, stakeholders, and public by identifying risks to performance or safety.

  • Mitigate liability by documenting an objective, professionally conducted evaluation.

  • Support return-to-duty decisions after medical, psychological or disciplinary absence.

  • Provide employees with recommendations and clarity about their next steps.
