Learning Disorder Assessments in Mansfield and Arlington

Understand learning challenges and find a clearer path forward.

When reading, writing, or math continues to feel difficult despite considerable effort, it can affect confidence as well as performance. You may be wondering why your child struggles with certain assignments—or why familiar challenges still affect you in college or at work.

Mansfield Counseling offers learning disorder assessments for children, teens, and adults. Our evaluations explore academic skills, relevant strengths, and the factors that may be contributing to learning difficulties.

What can a learning assessment explore?

The evaluation is tailored to the concerns you bring. Areas of assessment may include:

Reading and dyslexia

Difficulties with accurate word reading, reading fluency, or spelling.

Written expression

Challenges with spelling, sentence construction, organization, or communicating ideas in writing.

Mathematics and dyscalculia

Difficulties understanding number concepts, performing calculations, or solving math problems.

These concerns deserve careful consideration. A learning difficulty does not, by itself, establish a diagnosis.

When might an evaluation help?

You may want to discuss testing when:

  • Academic tasks consistently take much longer than expected.
  • Difficulties persist despite additional instruction or support.
  • Reading, writing, or math causes significant frustration.
  • A student avoids assignments or loses confidence in their abilities.
  • You need clarification about longstanding learning concerns.

Bring the questions that matter most to you. Examples from school, college, or work can help explain what you are experiencing.

What happens during an assessment?

  1. Discuss your learning history.

An initial interview explores current concerns, educational experiences, previous support, and the purpose of the evaluation.

  2. Examine relevant skills.

Your clinician selects assessment activities based on your age, history, and referral questions. These may include academic measures, cognitive assessment, questionnaires, and records review.

  3. Review the findings.

You receive a written report and a feedback appointment to discuss conclusions and recommendations.

Common questions

Is this the same as a school evaluation?

Private assessments and school evaluations can inform one another, but they serve different purposes. Schools make their own decisions about eligibility for educational services. A private report can contribute information to that process.

Can adults be evaluated?

Adults with longstanding academic difficulties can contact us to discuss whether an assessment would address their questions.

What if attention or emotional concerns are also involved?

Tell your clinician about those concerns. They can help determine the appropriate scope of the evaluation.
